Artist in Residency: Cherish Brooke Hill’s Colorful Smoky Eye
Trends come and go in a cyclical fashion, but some decades never really leave the beauty zeitgeist. For celebrity makeup artist Cherish Brooke Hill, there’s one era that’s referenced again and again in her prolific work: The colors and shapes of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Breathing life into a bygone era’s over-the-top aesthetic requires a keen working knowledge of its power players—both creators and icons—and the kind of judgement possessed by only the most talented of modern artists. To wit: Technicolor shadow and avant garde shapes aren’t for the faint of heart, but Hill isn’t afraid to take risks, which is how she ended up in Hollywood.

Behind This Look:

After using the same complexion protocol as her previous looks, Hill began the eye by applying Make Up For Ever Kohl Pencil along Ashley Moore’s upper lash line, then smoked it out into a directional flick. Hill then pressed the pencil into the outer third of the model’s bottom lashes to continue the moody feeling without weighing down the model’s eyes. Her waterline was last.

I knew I wanted to do a green eye, but it was a total experiment.

Using a small, dense brush, Hill blended two shades of shimmery green color over Moore’s lids to create a slight gradient effect: Fenty Snap Shadow Palette in Pastel Frost and Make Up For Ever Eyeshadow in Mint Green. She focused the lighter hue on the inner half of Moore’s eyes, then deepened the color as it faded into the outer flick using the other. As Hill has instructed throughout her residency, thin layers are key. A few coats of L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Mascara added extra depth.

Using Patrick Ta Velvet Blush in She’s Adorable, Hill sculpted Moore’s cheeks and added a subtle nod to the ‘80s by bringing the color upwards, just slightly onto the model’s temples. Hill applied Patrick Ta Precision Lip Crayon in She’s Bold followed by Tom Ford Beauty Lipstick in Rolando to finish the look.
