“What many people don’t realize about e-commerce is that it is basically a fully operational mini business within a bigger business,” says Kiana Basu Sanchez, Rose Inc’s Senior Director of eCommerce who oversees the direct-to-consumer business on RoseInc.com globally and manages and works with teams spanning tech and operations to creative and sales.
“I love being so hands-on in building a new brand from the ground up. It’s highly motivating,” she adds. “My favorite part about it all is the data and analytics that we can access and leverage to bring products and personalized experiences to our community,” she says. “I’m also lucky that my team inspires me. I see how dedicated and talented they are and I want to make sure I am fostering a productive and supportive environment for them to thrive.”
Kiana — who previously worked on Showtime Networks, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Estee Lauder and Makeup By Mario — lived many lives before she landed at Rose Inc last July. She studied international relations at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and got her Masters of Business Administration from Hult International Business School, and also worked on Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate Campaign in 2004; she’s also worked as a flight attendant and a freelance music journalist. “I have always been, and continue to be, passionate about a multitude of things. I’ve been blessed to have experienced different professional opportunities at a young age,” she says. “No [work] experience is bad experience. To quote Jay Z, ‘things don’t happen to you—they happen for you.’”
Although she didn’t always think she would end up in beauty — she was always set on being a lawyer before having a major change of heart in law school — she’s happy that she did. “It took me a long time to realize that what is pushed on us as the only standard of beauty in the media is not, in fact, the only standard of beauty,” she says. “To help others realize this sooner, I’ve made it my mission to do whatever is in my power to reflect a more representative image of beauty everywhere.” She does just that, these days, at Rose Inc, where she’s busy managing her growing team and creating diverse, monthly programming ideas for Roseinc.com: from enhancing and diversifying our shade finder, to executing our first live shopping event on the site to support the launch of our Tinted Serum.
In the latest iteration of our Day In The Life series, below, Basu, who is based in Chicago, where she was also born and raised, takes us through her typical work schedule and how she makes time for self-care through it all — from meditation and walks, to exercising and cooking with her husband. “I’ve learned that I’m more productive working from home. I can be better at my job if I can take care of myself.”
Wake up, splash my face with water, use Rose Inc’s Encapsulated Moisturizer and La Roche Posay Anthelios sunblock. Then, I make a cup of coffee, grab a light bite —today it’s a banana— and get ready to work out.
Head to a fitness class; I usually alternate between CrossFit and Lagree Reformer Pilates classes, both of which are less than a block away from home. Regular exercise is a major priority for me and is essential in maintaining both physical and mental wellness.
I head home, shower and get ready for work. Today my routine is Rose Inc Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser and Skinceuticals Silymarin CF serum once my face is completely dry. I like using Biossance Squalane + Peptide Eye Gel and our Microencapsulated Moisturizer for summer. I top this off with a 10-minute gua sha lymphatic drainage massage using Herbivore Lapis Blue Tansy Face Oil, followed by Glowscreen Sunscreen.
My summer makeup routine includes the Rose Inc Tinted Serum in 090, concealer and a clear brow gel. I like using Tom Ford’s bronzer in my eyelid creases and Milk Makeup's Kush Mascara. I use Rose Inc’s Solar Bronzer on my cheeks, forehead, nose and jawline as well as the Solar Highlighter on the high points of my face. For my lips, I use Dior Addict Lip Glow.
After I do my makeup, I take 10-15 minutes to practice meditation and make breakfast (and more coffee!) Meditation has become another important part of my daily ritual recently and helps me stay calm, focused and grounded throughout the day, come what may.
I log on. Since most of my team is on the West Coast and I am a couple hours ahead, I like to utilize the mornings to catch up on emails and work and connect with East Coast and U.K. team members. I usually do this while enjoying my breakfast and with the news on in the background.
Right now, I’m excited about a lot of the products we’ll be launching over the next few months. I am also looking forward to bringing Rose Inc to new international markets in the next year.
Once the team starts trickling online, we usually connect on Microsoft Teams Chat on any hot items and/or fires before starting meetings.
Because we are all remote and have to collaborate a lot, most days are packed with various video meetings with internal and external teams. Today, we have a standing digital alignment meeting, which we hold every Friday for the e-commerce, social, editorial and creative teams to review and align on all current and upcoming digital assets as we prepare to go into the following week.
I break for lunch. It depends on my schedule, but I try to take lunch away from my desk whenever possible so that I can eat mindfully and rest my overactive brain. My husband and I usually take turns making lunch for each other, depending on our schedules that day. Today, I have a break, so I made poached eggs on toast and a summer salad for us. I cook at home whenever I can. It’s one of my favorite parts about working remotely.
By now, I’m usually back in meetings. Meeting topics run the gamut. Common ones include creative strategy and asset review, ops and inventory planning, calendar planning, 360 marketing development, UX/UI roadmap development, forecasting and performance review. We’re currently working on a lot of site enhancements and new features for RoseInc.com to continuously improve the experience for our community.
I also like to move around a lot during the day. We recently moved from NYC to Chicago and we dedicated a lot of space in our new home to set up an office but I probably work from my desk less than anywhere else in my loft. I move from my kitchen island counter to my dining table to my sofa to my balcony and back again all day. I love being home though, so I typically don’t leave the house to work elsewhere.
Today, I had to jump on a conference call with my team for our monthly calendar planning session, where we collaborate on developing fun ways to roll out new product launches online for the upcoming month on RoseInc.com.
I catch up on emails and messages from the day and make sure I close out any hot items for the week like inventory or calendar planning, as well as organize priorities for next week. Email topics are generally mostly the same topics that are covered in meetings, usually to communicate or seek any new updates or developments or provide feedback. Beyond this, a lot of emails are either sharing performance analytics or proposing new business opportunities to leadership and/or the wider team.
I step away from work and switch gears to give my brain a break. I typically try to get a solid hour in of practicing vocals and piano or go for a walk on nice days. I am a summer baby, so I try to spend as much time outside as time and weather will allow during the warm months. I like to go for walks or get together with friends outside, either in a park or on a patio somewhere. I also try to catch as much live music as possible year round.
If I’m having a night in, my husband and I like to make dinner together when we can. It’s a way of creating something that we enjoy together while also spending time catching up. Other times, we get together with our family and friends; we are really enjoying having them close by again after being away for so long.
My husband and I enjoy watching TV. It’s helpful in winding down for bed and to take your mind off daily stressors that might literally keep you up at night.
I start getting ready for bed. I have a somewhat extensive nighttime skincare regimen that I like to indulge in and take my time with — that includes double cleansing, exfoliating peel pads and a lightweight moisturizer. I’m usually in bed by 11:20 and I read myself to sleep.
As Rose Inc’s Senior Director of eCommerce, Kiana Basu is busy managing online operations, business planning, and marketing strategies for RoseInc.com . She balances work with exercising, meditation, cooking with her husband, playing piano and a go-to playlist that gets her motivated for her busy days.
