Beauty industry events — the kind where editors, celebs, and influencers preview the latest product launches — are known for fun and playful experiences. One might be able to monogram a new compact or design a stunning flower bouquet, or for many beauty editors in New York and Los Angeles, experience a thought-provoking lipstick print reading by Ariana Lightningstorm. She’s a staple on the beauty event circuit for the Lipsology® method — but this time, we’re bringing her to you.
“Lipsology is the art and science of reading lip prints,” Ariana says about the technique, which analyzes a lipstick transfer for emotions, personality traits, energy levels and more. “When doing a reading there are 25 categories of lip prints and over 100 subcategories which include size, shape, color intensity, special markings, position and spacing, among others…so there's lots to see and tell about someone based on their lip prints.”
Developed over decades by its founder Jilly Eddy, the technique was actually born on the Johnny Carson show! Today, it’s Ariana and her Lipsology business partner Laura West that run the storied certification process for hopeful Lipsologists all over the world.

One kiss on the paper and Ariana knew that Kacie is a detail-orientated person who works hard and shines as a problem solver at work, all thanks to the size, shape, and placement of her prints.
See the small, funnel-like shape at the edge of her print? Ariana says that space means Kacie’s an excellent listener who’s great at keeping secrets. But Ariana also noticed something that needs attention: The faint color of Kacie’s transfer—which Ariana calls “ghost prints”—means she’s overdue for a vacation and needs to unplug to refuel her creative energy. That means she must be away from home, with no work, for at least three days — Lipsologist’s orders!

Stubborn, independent and stressed is how Ariana first read Lexy’s lip transfers, so the reading started with a piece of advice: Rest is needed. While the other two transfers feature open space, Lexy’s lips are pursed closed. Ironically enough, she created this print the day before a long weekend getaway, so Ariana suggested a follow-up appointment: Your print can change by the hour based on your emotions, so it’s a true snapshot of that moment and will likely show less tension next time.
