Why a soft, matte lip looks so right—right now
Every year, the CFDA Awards ceremony draws the Who’s Who of fashion—everyone from designers to stylists to our own editor-in-chief. Last night, the awards were held at the Brooklyn Museum, where RHW joined Joseph Altuzarra while wearing his deconstructed, midriff-baring blazer and sheer, lace-adorned trousers. That kind of statement-making style deserves (nay, requires) a face to match. As always, makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes was up to the creative challenge. “We went for modern ’90s supermodel vibes,” she says. Here’s how to channel them yourself.
SKIN
Hughes prepped RHW’s skin with Augustinus Bader The Cream and Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Intensive Eye Contour Cream. Next, she applied Glossier Stretch Concealer in Medium on the T-zone (“more like a tinted moisturizer, Hughes says). Just a touch of Jillian Dempsey Cheek Tint in Sunny complemented RHW’s natural cheek color, while a light dusting of Surratt Artistique Blush in Grisaille in the sockets her cheeks, underneath her jawline and around her hairline added slight contour.
EYES
Using a skinny brush and MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Quite Natural, Hughes created a straight and slightly lifted wing. Working back inward toward the eye, she blended the color with a small domed buffing brush to create an outer smoky wing. For definition, she worked black eyeshadow along RHW’s lash line (only at the root of the lash) and into the outer corner with a dense, fluffy brush. Next, using the Bodyography Perfect Palette, she used shimmery taupe and caramel shadows in the socket for a modern take on the ’90s crease. Rosie applied Chanel Le Volume de Chanel mascara before Hughes added a few Kiss Trio lashes on the outer edge. Boom—fluffy lashes for days.
BROWS
For that “big, defined, bushy ’90s brow,” Hughes brushed RHW’s brows up, set them with Got2B Spiking Glue (yes, it’s a hair product!), and filled them in with MAC Shape + Shade Brow Tint in Taupe.
LIPS
Hughes used Nars Powermatte Lip Pigment in American Woman all over RHW’s lips, then pressed in Jillian Dempsey Cheek Tint in Poppy over the top. “It gives the lips a really bright look,” Hughes says. And if you’re re-creating this look at home, the only thing left to do is cue up some George Michael—your ’90s-inspired face will fit right in with the lip-syncing supes.
